Ryan Goff’s path as a maker continues to influence and define the work which he produces in the studio today. His connection with art began at a very young age, here in Wabash County. It was during his undergraduate studies at the Herron School of Art in Indianapolis that he discovered his passion for
sculpture. It was here that he began to work with clay, stone, wood and metal casting in exploring his creativity. He went on to further his education through receiving a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts, with a focus in sculpture from the University of Kentucky. While in Lexington, he worked primarily in wood and metal casting. During the summer of 2001, Ryan had the opportunity to travel to England, with several colleagues, in order to build an iron furnace and conduct iron casting workshops with British artists. Upon his return to the US, he moved to the mountains of North Carolina and began a 5 year apprenticeship under a master woodworker. This was the first time in his career that he began to build functional pieces, for which his work took a new direction, yet again. Goff began to incorporate his sculptural background with fine woodworking, resulting in sculptural furniture. Upon finishing his apprenticeship, Ryan received a unique opportunity which led him to Louisville, Kentucky. He was offered a position to run a woodshop for a pipe organ company. He remained with the company for 9 years, traveling throughout the South East, working in large cathedrals. Working in sacred environments had a deep impact on his aesthetic, which he carried into the studio. In 2013, Ryan went into business for himself and began Coydog Studios, specializing in all aspects of fine woodworking. Still in the Louisville area, He developed relations with interior designers, contractors and home owners in producing work out of his shop. 2017 brought yet another move for Ryan, his family and his business, Coydog Studios, as he returned to Northern Indiana to set up shop and further his creative endeavors. Today, Coydog Studios continues to operate under Ryan and his wife Nichole. They also incorporate their 3 sons into the business, preserving tradition and creativity through their multi-faceted approach as makers. Coydog Studios specializes in high-end, custom woodworking, from furniture to fine cabinetry to architectural woodworking. Ryan also continues to design/build sculptural furniture along with expressing himself through sculpture, printmaking and drawing.
